ICOS2017: Challenges, Opportunities and Future Directions

Abstract submission deadline: December 20, 2016, 23:59 CET

We are calling all full-time university students to submit their abstracts to ICOS2017 and be considered for the Best Student Paper Award in 2017!

An independent commission will evaluate and select the best three student works whose authors will receive monetary awards at a ceremony to be held on March 30 2017 at ICOS2017 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The awarded students will also be given a chance to present their research at ICOS2017 and have them published in the ICOS2017 Conference Proceedings.

University students from various disciplines that use or intend to use statistical data in their research – by no means limited to mathematics, economics and IT – are invited to submit their work. Manuscripts will be evaluated and scored on the basis of their originality, contribution to science and the use of official statistics data in their analyses. Manuscripts may be original research papers, review papers or concept papers / thinkpieces, however additional points will be awarded to manuscripts that include analyses primarily focusing on data originating from official statistics. To be considered for this award, student must be either a sole or the first author of submitted manuscript. All candidates will have to present a proof of their registration as a full-time student at a recognized academic institution in 2016-17.

The International Conference on Official Statistics; Challenges, Opportunities and Future directions (ICOS2017) is a joint initiative by the School of Economics and Business of the University of Sarajevo and the Institute for Statistics of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina that aims to bring together academics, practitioners and data users to present their research, share their best practices, and discuss avenues for development of official statistics in Bosnia and Herzegovina and globally.

This inaugural international scientific gathering will be held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on 30 and 31 March 2017, and will aim to become a biennial event. It will include presentations by prominent international invited speakers, as well as high-quality research findings from applicants selected through rigorous manuscript review by the international Scientific Program Committee. All accepted manuscripts will be published in ICOS2017 Conference Proceedings, which we will aim to register with prominent citation indexes/databases.

Original contributions on topics covered below (this is by no means an exhaustive list) are solicited:

Quality in official statistics (includes sampling, data collection, analysis, interpretation and visualization), methodology development and harmonization, innovation and modernization of official statistics, use of modeling in official statistic, sector-specific statistics and data gaps (e.g., economic, demographic, environmental, health, education statistics), open/linked data, misuse of statistics, statistics for decision-making and development, data analytics, data visualization, data mining, big data, impact evaluation, use of geospatial information in statistics, data confidentiality, and others.
